Lots of security, lots of cross platform functionality. Prettycool, I can imagine some uses for that. It's a free service at the level where they store your 20 most recentlysent documents. More features and storage at higher price points.

BlinkSale online invoicing, 2nd version just released. I'm going to lookinto this one later this month.

FeedRinse RSS feed filtering. Youset up conditions for an item in a feed to get past the filter, Feedrinse gives you a new feed that will only deliverthe items that pass the test. I love this service. I use it all the time and just turned a client on to ityesterday. With some creative thinking this opens up some neat possibilities. Plus the site is so pretty tolook at. Doesn't seem like that complicated a task, but I've read elsewhere that feed filtering is processintensive enough that it makes sense to have a dedicated service in the consumer space.

EditGrid online, shared spreadsheets. Editable with real time updates, importsand exports in MS Excel, CSV, Gnumeric and OpenOffice.org Calc. Looks pretty nice. I know there anumber of services like this out there, but I haven't done any in depth feature comparison.

Teamslide $99 bucks for AJAX based "screen sharing" type web conferencyprogram? I'm interested for sure, but don't know if I'll be plunking down a hundred for it. It could begreat, though!

Well, that's a wrap up of my favorites of the week from Emily Chang's eHub! If people like this, maybe I'll make it a regularpost.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

On Salesforce.com's service interruptions

Bizweek'sSteve Hamm has an interesting write up today on the all-too-frequent down time at Salesforce.com. As probably the darling of the Software as a Service set,Salesforce's woes make an interesting case study for the sector in general. Hamm chronicles the company'sdesperate attempts to make downtime less frequent and CEO Marc Benioff's frustration with the situation.

Mythoughts include:

It's nice to see some one so prominent talking about this problem in a major forum. The web application sector in general has got to get this problem under control and if web 2.0 is largely abouttransparency then it would be nice to hear more from other vendors about what they are doing about it.

Salesforce has taken great steps to keep users informed on the status of their services, including near real timereporting. How many of your vendors don't even have a blog, much less regular communication concerning theirservice delivery issues?

Perhaps this can be a talking point for those of us encouraging people to have faith in other services inparticular. I know I've told people in the past things like, "You think the site I designed for you has alot of validation errors? You should see CNN.com!" (Eek.) I can totally see myself tellingpeople similarly, "I know it's frustrating that service X is down right now, but even Salesforce.com goes down allthe time!" This is not ideal.

Benioff goes so far as to tell Hamm that service interruptionslead to more press which leads to spikes in sales! Talk about no press is bad press. I can't believe hesaid that, but I guess largess enables even further transparency.<h6 style="clear: both; Writely has a copyright from Googleon the bottom of the page already. Their FAQpage has a section on it about Google, but it also still says

How muchdoes Writely cost?

During the beta period, Writely is free.

Yet, check thisout:

Will you start showing Google ads in my documents?

There are currently no plans to add advertising to the site. If that changes, we'll let folksknow.

And if you were wondering like I was, it looks like Writely has added Mac support. They stillaren't taking new users yet, but there's a waiting list.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

Craigslist slapped with suit by fair housing group

Filed under: citizen media, e-commerce, lawsuits, web services
The Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has filed suit against Craigslist, citing the appearance on the site of discriminatory housing ads thatviolate the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Such ads are illegal in newspapers and other print publications, and the housinggroup maintains that online publications like Craigslist should be held to the same standards. Craigslist CEO JimBuckmaster counters with two arguments: one, that the site is a "user-controlled commons" and as such shouldnot be treated exactly as if it were a newspaper; two, that mandating a manual screening process for all two millionfree housing ads (of unlimited length) submitted per month would be unreasonably burdensome for his company of 19employees to implement.

His second argument is pretty weak. What about the first one? We're still takingbaby steps in the process of applying legal structures from the offline to the online world, and a case like this couldset legal precedent with far-reaching ramifications for online publications. What happens when the wisdom of crowdsisn't so wise, after all? Who is then responsible? IMHO Craiglist is benefiting from the "wisdom of crowds"and should in turn bear the responsibility that comes with it. It seems to me they can't have it both ways -- reap thebenefits of the crowd's wisdom, yet turn around and scapegoat the crowd's ignorance. I think the housing group has agood case, and should they win, we may see the cost of social advertising rise dramatically.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

Yahoo gobbles up del.icio.us

Filed under: companies, social bookmarking, web services, Yahoo, web 2.0

Well, now, isn't this fascinating - Yahoo acquireddel.icio.us.
One of the big ticket items of the day was the launch of YahooAnswers, which aims to be every bit the community-powered knowledge base that Google Answers isn't. Both allow youto ask questions, but the latter's queries are answered by pre-screened experts while Yahoo is taking a long-tail,wisdom of crowds approach - any Yahoo member can answer a question, and user ratings determine the"best" of the crop. A reputation system will supposedly weed out the experts from the spammers.

I'm all for the experiment and I'm quite curious to see how it turns out. It would be nice to have a general one-stopshop for this kind of collective Q & A, as opposed to tracking down and poking through various subject-specificuser forums. Also, this service has promise to capture the more ephemeral day-to-day questions that don't really fitinto any of those forums: "What are some good gift ideas for moms?" "How can I learn tobreakdance?" (despite popular opinion, I did not submit that one.)

But, as an experiment, it facesmany of the same challenges those user forums have faced (and many failed) before. Greg Linden notes (via Pete Cashmore) thatpopularity voting does not truth make. Gary Price notes that spam, scams, infomercials and troublemakersare all very likely outcomes for the user community to police on its own, as Yahoo currently has no plans to maintainthe knowledgebase. I'm also curious to know what social services folks are actually using the most, beyond whateveris the latest hot company we're talking about on the blawgs. So, in light of both of these things, I'm kicking off aninformal poll: what are your top five favorite social software services currently in use? I'll start:

(drumroll, please)... Flickr. Shocking, I know.

del.icio.us

My Web 2.0 - I tend to store everything in My Web 2.0 and only asubset of things to del.icio.us, but I use both frequently to find cool stuff.

Memeorandum - when I need news fast, which is all the time, this is what I use.

YouTube is emerging asa new favorite. I like that I can so easily embed video on my own blogs.

A nice solidhonorable mention goes to last.fm which is dutifully logging what my media server isplaying even when I'm not hanging out on the site finding new music.

Aight, peeps, I'm passing the mic- what are your top 5 faves?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

How would you change Flickr?

Filed under: photo-sharing, social software, web services, web 2.0

We had done a successful "Howwould you change..." feature series over on Engadget that TUAW also recently took up with the "You're incharge..." series. The idea is, pick a gadget/application/web service and create a massively multiplayerwishlist for that thing. Seems like this could work well in SocialSoftwareLandia, so let's see how it goes - Howwould you change Flickr? I'll start with a few, then please throw yourwishlist into the comments...

Local interestingness - see the most interesting photos onlyfrom my contacts / friends / family.

Interestingness reverse lookup - when viewingone of my photos, I want a way to find out how "interesting" it is - is it in my top 200? Is it#437? How interesting (or not...) is it for this day on Flickr?

I often wish I couldcollect other people's photos into sets.

Some more elegant way to keep track of the 290groups I'm in... maybe some sort of dashboard page I could drop a few groups into at a time and just monitorseveral at any one time.

Or, just browse the maps others have created - from the Philadelphia Marathon route to LA gay bars to bestplaces to snorkel on Maui. You can leave comments on each map or contact the mapmaker directly with questions. Thisis cool on a large scale to share points of interest with a wide audience, or on a small scale to set up a map of yourfamily's recent road trip to share with your friends, e.g. - I like that it works on both levels. The keys willbe getting people to come contribute to another data silo, and making sure folks can easily find something interestingwhen they're browsing/searching.

[Hat tip to Marshall Kirkpatrickand Narendra Rocherolle for the heads up!]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

Web 2.0 bingo

Filed under: web services, web 2.0

Haven't seenany confirmation or anything other than the standard "we can't comment" since the rumours of Google flirting with Riya started flying. Riya (nee Ojos) uses face recognition technology to helpautotag your photo collection. I got a demo of Riya from the uber-fun TaraHunt at Tagcamp and was pretty impressed - you train the software simply by tagging a few photos of someone, andit then automagically finds other photos of that person and autotags them. It's not perfect yet, but it did make animpressive number of correct matches, even identifying photos where the person's face was turned or in shadow, etc.

Of course I'm going to complain that it's Windows-only (and IE6 only, even, blech!)... which makes it aperfect candidate for the Goog, who loves to stick it to Mac users. ;) Riya plans Firefoxand Mac support in the future, so I'm complaining now while the complaining is good. Anywho - you know howrumours are, and we may still not know anything even after Riya's launch party tonight at TechCrunch central.

Om has more on the rumours.

[Via Memeorandum]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

Google Base is now live

Filed under: Google, web services, web 2.0

So the Google Base service that was sniffed out last month is now live. Google Blogoscoped has a nice review of the app with screenshots. Haven't triedit myself yet and honestly, I'm not that excited about it. Enough of my Base already belongs to Google, really, and it'sdifficult to garner any enthusiasm for Yet Another Walled Data Garden. YMMV - let us know in the comments ifyou're make use of Google Base and what you like/dislike about the service.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

Tagzania = maps   tags

Filed under: APIs, folksonomy, mapping, mashups, remix culture, social software, tagging, web services, web 2.0, Creative Commons

Itonly seems logical there would be a collaborative effort to add a folksonomy component to world mapping - enter Tagzania. Whereas 43places is more travel-oriented, focused onphotos and user experience and stories of places, Tagzania makes use of the Google maps API to actually add tags to themaps themselves - so you can set a waypoint and tag it up. Each waypoint then becomes a "page" with anRSS feed, to track what other users add over time. All content submitted becomes open content under a Creative CommonsShareAlike license.

[Via Smartmobs]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

43places: travelling without moving

Filed under: folksonomy, Ruby on Rails, social software, tagging, web services, Creative Commons

As atravel buff, I'm digging on the new 43places social travel site, done by the 43things Robot Co-op folks. It's yet another Ruby on Rails site, cleanly designed and easyto use, and has the potential to become quite addictive. You can specify the places on your travel wishlist and findout what others have said about those locations, as well as flag the places you've been and rate them, relate anexperience, and upload photos. There's also a - bless them - folksonomy component for tagging places, and awhole myriad of ways to find people you might want to connect with - because they're geographically close to you, they live in the places you want to go, or they want to go to the same places you do. Another way cool feature is thatif you upload photos to Flickr, tag them with place names and use aCreative Commons license, 43places will pick them up via the magic that is web services. Now if you'll pardon me, I'moff to keep <strike>procrastinating</strike> feeding my wanderlust. See you in Tibet!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.
