The most exciting feature seems to be the ability to drop some HTML into your blog post andcreate a link that allows up to 100 users to have a Skype conversation at once. It seems to use SkypeOut, so itwill be a money maker. I wonder if those calls will act as conference calls - the new software lights up thepicture of whoever is speaking at the time in a conference call. Nice.

So last month or so AMDsubpoenaed Skype alleging that they were colluding with Intel to limit Skype conference calls on non-Intel machines to6 or less users at a time. This Skypecast service seems to get around those allegations. That's nice.

Tell me though, why oh why is there still not a way to record the audio from calls? Third party servicesabound, but selecting one is no small task. GizmoProject has one clickrecord to .wav file.

The deal breaker? No Mac version yet. I'm going to freak out if thatdoesn't get resolved soon. Mac versions are way behind the Windows versions. That's just cold.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

Vivox is making virtual reality VOIP

Tony Walsh atClickable Culture has posted a long write up of some experimental technology in the works from a company called Vivox that will enable Voice Over Internet Protocal calls to made inside and out from VRworlds like Second Life. Reviewed today by both TechCrunch and Mashable, I found this service via eHub. There's browser based recording, phone-in recording, descriptions, tags, RSS feeds, groups, albums and oh so much more. You can also charge a fee for listeners to be able to listen- but the first one here is on me, ok?

Update: I've tried two more times to make recording throughFirefox on a Mac. Both times I got choppy recordings that were lost when I tried to save them. I saw anerror screen about browser difficulties and am now frustrated enough that I will be darned if I try the browser recordagain.

The service is free for pretty basic use but for $5 per month you can do lots more, includingrecording Skype phone calls! Very nice for those of us on a Mac.

Problems:

I hit error messages more than once.

My browser recording got cut off on the beginningand end, though I've only tried it once so far.

I'd sure like a direct link to the MP3 file up there inthat iframe player. I presume, for example, that the file won't be delivered as an enclosure in this RSS feed asI have the file inserted now.

There's a couple of pages that seem disconnected. At one point itlooked like I could only "add to a blog" in blogger.com, but at another point I got this nice little iframecode you see displayed above. I imagine that means to publish automatically, which would be rad. I'd liketo do that on Word Press.

The company blog takes pride in their international users, but it surewould be nice to have an 800 number for people in the developing world to call. Maybe this is totally unrealisticand Skype recording is the way to do it. The blog is stoked about a user from Ghana, but only certain kinds offolks in Ghana are going to want to drop $5 per month for premium membership. I guess that's just how things workand I should go take it up with the UN or something to plunk down the money for an 800 number podcast recordingsystem.

All in all, though - I'd say this is a pretty awesome service. Very usable, notintimidating. As others have pointed out, they have a business model, which seems to be more than you can say forOdeo. Evoca could probably use more chicken icons though.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

Skype gets subpeona in AMD/Intel lawsuit

According to News.com, AMD has send Skype a subpoena for all documents related to the company's deal with Intel to offer 6 to10 way conference calling exclusively to users with Intel chips in their computers. Background stories on thehardware requirements and how legitimate the exclusive deal is can be found here and here. Infoworld's Tom Yager has had good, ongoing coverageof the lawsuit.

I know that the issue here is Intel's pressure, and Skype's motto isn't "Do noEvil" (nor is it "the world can talk for free, all at one time") but there's something that seems dirtyabout this. The above background stories that came out before the subpoena are filled with people not wanting tocomment but admitting that unsavory things were true. There's no proof of anything yet, but do you trustSkype? Now that they are owned by eBay do you trust them more or less? I don't know how I feel about ityet. It will be interesting to see if any back room deals at the expense of users come out of this subpoena.<h6 style="clear: both;
