I'm excited to read that the SIP
(standard Session Initiation Protocol) based VOIP system Gizmo Project just got
some VC support. Gizmo is a product of the
company SIPphone. If you've never used Gizmo before, it's a lot like Skype for standard end users. But it's not Skype, which I like because I like
competition. In fact, it's prioritization of standards and openness are said to encourage collaboration and cross
platform competition. For example, Gizmo users
can IM with Google Talk users. Two other things I like about it are that calling land lines or cell phones outside the system only costs 1 cent per minute and it offers one click recording to a .WAV file. In case you're interested, I've recently done one Gizmo interview that sounded good (post with link to file) and one with Doug Kaye of IT Conversations that sounded less good but was still very easy to record (post with full file and excerpts).
If you're interested in following Gizmo news, here's an OPML file
containing the Gizmo company blog and
the feed for a TalkDigger search for links to the SIPphone company's site. Both feeds appear to contain new items about once a
week.

1. Some points about SIP I think are worth mentioning:
- Allows faxing, what skype does not allow so far
- WIFI hardware to connect landline phones and SIP providers already exists (Linksys PAP2, to name one)
What still keeps me using Skype is that most, to no say all, SIP providers tips a fixed monthly fee and Skype does not.
