Another chapter in the BBC's
clueful approach to social media — they've launched the Action
Network, an open forum for people to connect on local issues they feel passionate about. Most of the content is
user-contributed — anything prepared by the BBC is clearly delineated as such. You can find out about issues going on
near you by entering your zip code, or find issues you're already interested in by search. Engage in a voting campaign
or an already ongoing discussion, or prepare your own article on a topic of interest to you. I think this is social
software with its heart in the right place — it helps build local and regional community while actively encouraging
citizens to be proactive about civic issues. More like this, please! Thanks.

1. Well, whilst it may have only just been officially launched, it's been in open beta under the name "iCan" for about 18 months now.
