The Washington Post says 'yes'! Today Cynthia Webb cites Friendster, Eurekster, Tribe, MySpace, and Orkut in her 'It
Pays to Have Friends Online' article.
More talk about Orkut — Google's foster child. Cynthia cites articles by The Wall Street Journal Online, Search Engine
Watch, The San Jose Mercury News, The Register, The San Francisco Chronicle, E-Commerce Times, Reuters, and IDG's
InfoWorld. Phew! Orkut certainly falls into the 'everybody's talking about it' category.
In other Orkut news, elsewhere on the Internet, I personally loved Ross Mayfield's description of Orkut as
"frictionless whuffie fun." Others — like Cory Doctorow, an ardent FOAF fan, who has a mail filter that silently
discards invitations to join Orkut — have not been so kind. Still others are selling Orkut 'invitations' on eBay, and
many others are asking "Please, please, please invite me to Orkut!"
Will the tsunami of VC money pouring into Social Networking Sites (SNS) bouy up or crush the ability of these SNS's to
monetize their services?
